Correspondence, 1865-1868, property tax receipts, 1857-1867, and other papers. Chief correspondents include A.R. McCown's father, J.C. McCown, and brother, Carmel A. McCown, merchants of Fairview, Brooke County, W. Va. Their letters concern goods ordered from Philadelphia for the Fairview store, and document both the financial arrangements among the correspondents and the economic conditions in the region. Tax receipts are for properties in Johnson, Page, Poweshiek, Scott, and Winneshiek counties and the city of Davenport, all in Iowa.
